Top 5 Job Search Hacks
Being in a job search is incredibly frustrating, and standing out from the crowd is nearly impossible. Here are some tips and tricks for hacking your way to a better job search. None of these alone will get you a job, but they will help you take some power back from the employers.
Most email programs have either free trial periods or give permanent free usage to low volume users (if you email out more applications than they give you for free, you're doing something wrong). There are a few solid reasons to do this. You can track opens, clicks, unsubscribes (you should include that ability for reasons I'll go into below), forwards and more. One of the most frustrating parts of a jobs search is not knowing if anyone even saw your application. This minimizes that frustration, even though none of these programs are 100% accurate.
- Let's schedule an interview!
- Hmmm, looks interesting, but we're not sure you're a fit. Can you tell me more?
- The position is on hold for now.
- We're no longer hiring for that position.
- You're not a fit for the position
- We don't accept email submissions
- We're trained monkeys and aren't actually reading your email.
- It limits your online exposure, so feels less risky to employers
- It takes much less time to have a committed guest posting relationship,
- It brands you as an expert. Anybody can throw up a blog, but if you really want to create the perception of value have other people validate it. Pump your resume up with hyperlinks to guest posts you've written that are even vaguely connected to your core skills set/ expertise. Employers will be impressed.

What format should a word document be in in order to upload it to a job search website?
I'm putting together a resume in MS Word and I've become confused with what format it needs to be saved as in order to upload it online (or e-mail it). From the research I've done, simply just saving it as (.doc) will work fine. Then I'm also seeing to save it as either text, rich text format(rtf) or ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)...what's the difference between these three? Are all of the above ok? I know someone is going to say PDF, but my MS Word "Save as" formatting options include "rich text format" and (.doc), no pdf or plain text....So confusing, HELP!

How does one get a summer job when they have little experience?
I am a 19 year old college student home for the summer. I desperately need a job as I have to pay a good chunk of my tuition, rent, food, etc. for next year.
The issue is that I've been home for over 3 weeks now, applying to places everyday (both in-store and online/craigslist). I got one interview from which I was not hired. I am frustrated because I am a smart, responsible, hard-worker. My only experience has been volunteering in high school and working at a summer camp one summer.
I am not picky, I am looking for anything really. I apply to anything "entry-level", "team member", etc. Retail, food services, etc. However, I either do not hear back or I get a reply that "your qualifications do not match our needs, sorry". I understand that they want experience. But everyone has to start somewhere, right?
This job searching process is making me feel incompetent. All my other friends got jobs through family connections. I am not that fortunate. What can I do? I dress nicely, am courteous, follow up. I get no replies though!
