Capitalism vs. democratic socialism?
First off, I'm a socialist. Yes, I AM A SOCIALIST. I believe capitalism is a system which eventually buries a nation in a stagnant state in which the economy finally falters due to the rich becoming riches and the poor becoming poorer. Capitalism bases its system in that everybody struggles to live and if for some reason the person loses a job, banks and government won't consider the situation and the person- blameless of his situation- ends up in the streets, living like a dog. No, I can't support this type of system.
So what kind of socialism I support? This is what I believe- today we are facing a crisis and many people who are losing their jobs are totally blameless of their situation. They are jobless because they got laid off- because the corporation they worked on "needed" to lower costs or reduce its workforce to save money (so the CEO's and main bosses get higher salaries).
Let's get real- finding a job today is getting closer to be as easy as winning a lottery. The competition is fierce. Many people have been unemployed for months and years, sent hundreds and thousands of applications with little response, just a few interviews and no offers. Do you really believe they deserve to end up in the streets?
All human beings that have proven to be useful deserve the basics- housing, food, good health and education. It is so darn arrogant to think that all people need to work they way out to these, because we believe that they are lazy if they don't work. When someone is not working we quickly blame the person and never think of the circumstances.
I say that when a person is not on the workforce, while he applies to jobs and this is monitored by the local government (county, state or federal, probably best by county or city) he is given the basics. At least the person needs to apply to certain number of jobs per months to keep the help while he is unemployed, and meanwhile he receives the basics- food, medication if needed, education if needed, housing. Capitalism does not consider this- it is all about you make your way to live. This is definitely the way it should be if the person has the ability to work and is given the opportunity. I'm not saying the government needs to sustain all unemployed, but only those who PROVE they are trying to get up and work again.
Democratic socialism considers this. Is like a combination of capitalism with secular socialism. If you do nothing, then you get nothing. If it's proven that you are doing nothing, and you are to blame for your situation and you are lazy, then make a living up on the streets. But if you are trying hard and are a victim of the current crisis, then if we pay taxes the government should reciprocate to help the citizens.
Don't you think?
