First Person: Indiana State Fairgrounds Job Fair
The Indiana State Fair Job Fair was held today (Thursday, June 2, 2011) from 3:pm to 7:pm. The original article I saw posted on the Indianapolis Star website stated that there would be 600 jobs available for "ticket sellers, ticket takers, gate supervisors, parking attendants, parking supervisors, maintenance, security, shuttle bus staff and grandstand ushers."
Since I have several years of retail management experience and a Masters in HRD, I figured I could land a job as a supervisor. I headed out to the job fair at 1:30pm. At 1:55pm, I hit major traffic on 38th street. Due to the traffic, I had to stop for gas. I arrived at the Indiana State Fairgrounds around 2:30pm. As I approached the Our Land Pavilion, I noticed more than 100 people standing in line. In fact, it may have been closer to 300. I parked my car and debated on whether or not I wanted to fight that line. Since I had already put $10.00 in gas in my car, I decided to stay.
I exited my car and greeted another attendee. He was retired and simply looking for something to get him out of the house. I completely understood. We entered the line behind hundreds of people. It was 2:45pm.
At 3:05pm, we were handed a sheet of paper that welcomed us to the 2011 Indiana State Fair Job Fair. It stated that all participants would be subjected to a criminal and driving history background check. The hourly rate for most positions would be $7.25 an hour.
Then I looked at the available jobs; facility maintenance, parking attendant, ticket sellers and takers, t-shirt security personnel, education, grandstand, and shuttle bus. No where in that list did it mention needing supervisors or ushers. I suppose I could reasonably assume that grandstand means ushers, but I was a bit taken aback at the list. It wasn't what was in the original article.
I stood in line anyway. I was determined to show someone my resume and hopefully get a supervisor position. Around 4:30pm I made it inside the building. We were handed applications to fill out. I filled mine out and looked around. We had to stand in another line.
At first I wasn't sure where the line went or why there was a second line if we were simply turning in applications. As I got closer, I realized that they were doing preliminary interviews with all the applicants. There were eight sets of tables set up. We walked over to the table that represented what we most wanted to do. I walked over to education. Education was also the shortest line.
I was asked a few questions. I asked what the job entailed. I handed the woman my application and resume and told her if they had any supervisor positions available that I would like one of those. She said they were available, and I watched as she marked some notes down on her page. Then she stapled her notes, and my application and resume together. The packet was then tossed into a pile on the floor. I exited the building around 5:45pm. All in all it was a long and very interesting day at the Indiana State Fair fairgrounds.
